ANCIENT ROMAN SHELL PENDANT NECKLACE C.100-400 AD

$195.00 Sale

Silvered bronze, 1 1/4” height plus the ring. Mellon form in the full round on an integral spindle. The bottom is a form about which there is some uncertainty.  Romans were very dependent on the sea and used sea motifs, real and mythical extensively in their art and decoration. Seashells are depicted in mosaics and wall paintings. However, several variant sources describe these as worn specifically by prostitutes. As prostitution was openly practiced, that may be the case. If so, the spindle is likely a further and corresponding anatomical reference.  Professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored on a Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with the certification of authenticity.
