Based on the Ancient Egyptian underworld symbol, the ankh, the crux ansata signified life and eternal life. It is a cross with a loop or handle top said to represent a sandal strap. It was used with talismanic significance in art, particularly textiles. Its use as an amulet as here, is quite rare. This example is over ¾” high (0.81”) with some surface texture from burial. It has been professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored and mounted on an 18” gilt Sterling silver neck chain, for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
