SCANDINAVIAN HEART PENDANT NECKLACE, 11TH-12TH CENTURY AD

$215.00 Sale

The period of conversion to Christianity for Vikings. A remnant of the old pagan mythology in the form of an anatomically accurate heart, comprised of paired large swirls with pointed bottom and nubs at the bottom quarter points. A curious throwback to Viking pagan religion, elements of which were blended with Christianity. Such “transitional” elements were common and persist even today in the form of superstitions and belief in the occult. The form is unmistakably Viking, with pairs of addorsed circles forming a cross with quartered nubs defining a saltire. The overall profile is clearly a reference to the earlier Viking heart. Slightly under 1” width. Professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored on an 18” sterling silver neck chain for modern wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
