SUPERB VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE, 9th-10th CENTURY

$545.00 Sale
Gilt bronze. This example is just over 1 1/8” high including the suspension loop, with a crenulated swelled central column superimposed on the crescent moon, with large expanded terminals representing Sol the sun and Mani the moon. They surround a smaller, raised edge crescent moon with circular terminals, again representing the sun and moon deified. The solar system was sacred to Vikings and this icon represents a supernatural event or relationship now obscured. As expert navigators, the constellations signified mystery and power to Vikings. Lunar pendants were worn as pectorals as well as suspended from belts, and other clothing. Well preserved and detailed. Professionally refurbished with the pure 24karat gold overlay restored for contemporary wear. On a modern gilt Sterling silver neck chain, gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
