VIKING LUNAR PENDANT C.900-1000 AD

$245.00 Sale
Just over 1/2” width (0.57”). Broad crescent form with an incised line on each side, probably niello inlaid originally. Now with some wear and surface texture from burial.  As expert navigators, the constellations signified mystery and power to Vikings. The Moon was personified as Mani, brother to Sol the Sun, and is abundantly represented in Norse literature. Lunar pendants were worn as pectorals as well as suspended from belts, other clothing, and horse harnesses. This example is professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored, on an 18” modern gilt Sterling silver chain and gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
