VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH PENDANT NECKLACE 10th-11th CENTURY

$130.00 Sale
Rare example, circular bronze, just over 1 1/8” diameter. Gathered at the quarter points, probably a version of the “handshake” motif which was popular throughout Europe during the period. The surface with textured from burial. Professionally conserved and the silver surface restored. On a modern black leather neck cord with sterling silver closure, gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Substantial form and proportions.
