VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH PENDANT 10th CENTURY
Circular bronze, just under 1” diameter. The cross pin notch flanked by “curtain fold” motif with the lower half flat. The back of half round section.. The surface with light texture from burial. Professionally conserved and the 24karat gold surface restored. On a modern black leather neck cord with gilt closure, gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior.
