MEDIEVAL CHRISTIAN CROSS AMULET, 7TH-10TH CENTURY
Provincial example, possibly incorporate ng Viking influence. Gilt bronze of short proportions and especially thick suggesting it was hand fashioned from a larger item rather than cast. 5/8” height plus the suspension loop. Roughly symmetrical. The surface chiseled with a central saltire surrounded by groups of ordered cuts, cabalistic or perhaps Viking runes. The double Christian references are unmistakable and the blending with older mythology is well known during the period.
