SUPERB VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE, 9TH-10TH CENTURY AD
Slightly over 1 1/8" height plus the suspension loop. Bronze, cast, and chased in minute detail as the crescent moon with baluster tips representing Sol the sun and Mani the moon. The body with raised edges front and back and a high raised medial to the front. Above, a cone with a central nub, perhaps an anatomical reference. The base with a beaded ring supporting five triangles of nub clusters, detailed front, and back. Viking worship involved the heavenly bodies on which they relied for guidance when sailing. Fine quality and exceptional preservation with the 24karat gold overlay restored and mounted on a modern gilt neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
