BENIN BRONZE PECTORAL
Second half of the 19th century. 6 1/4" height modeled in full relief as a warrior in his wicker helmet with broad neck ornament. His visage with characteristically exaggerated features and lifeless stare. Minor casting flaws with deep age patina. Large and heavy, it would have been worn for ceremonial or formal occasions and possibly stored at the king's alter when not in use. Ex: Christie's London and likely part of the booty from the English Benin Punitive Expedition of 1897 which included the famous palace plaques at the British Museum.
