EARLY CHRISTIAN RING, 7th-10th CENTURY
Gilt bronze. Size 8 3/4. Rounded band flared to the shoulders. Circular bezel cut with zigzags surrounding two hatched bands. The significance now lost, however, such symbolism had religious context, often related to local saints. Wearing such a ring or cross was a declaration of Christian belief at a time when the unconverted were subject to death. Professionally refurbished with the gold overlay restored.
