EARLY MEDIEVAL CROSS
9th-10th century. Bronze, 1 1/8" total height. Symmetrical sphere tipped arms of square center with a saltire, one side and diamond motif to the reverse. Suspension loop intact. The saltire, like a Roman X, (also known as a St. Andrew's cross) was used on the coinage of the Christian Emperors of Rome and symbolized the authority of the Christian church in the 9th and 10th centuries. Excellent with dark patina and crisp detail.
