Exceptional Viking Protective Brooch, 950-1050 AD
Large example, over 2 1/4" height of omega form. Oval top with large quadrangular terminals decorated in panels of scroll work in the Viking taste on hatched ground, below bisected panels. Quite crisply preserved. When fastened to the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. In ADdition to being more decorative, examples of this form provided ADded protection with the trailing tails. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Professionally refurbished with the pure silver overlay restored and suspended from a broad link 3mm Sterling silver neck chain. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
