FINE ANCIENT VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE C.900-1050 AD
Gilt bronze. As expert navigators, the constellations signified mystery and power to Vikings. Lunar pendants were worn as pectorals as well as suspended from belts, other clothing and horse harnesses. This example is just over 1 1/4” high with a tall bulbous central column superimposed on the crescent moon, with a conical projection below. Matching bulbous terminals representing Sol the sun and Mani the Moon. The column, above and below the crescent, as well as the crescent itself and its terminals, are all rendered in intricate crenulated motifs. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored and mounted on a modern gilt neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
