FINE MEDIEVAL EUROPEAN CROSS NECKLACE
11th-12th century. Of early style, with cross beam centered and the beam tips crossed in the Jerusalem Cross fashion used through the Crusades. Very unusually, both sides decorated in full relief. The tips are further embellished with three circles and a central circle each of which along with the circle at the cross beam intersection, represents the five wounds of Christ. The borders extending as “crutches” at the beam terminals describing five crosses in one, known as the Crusader's cross, having been an element in the arms of Godfrey of Bouillon which he wore during the First Crusade. He was made the first King of Jerusalem. For that reason, it is also known as the Jerusalem Cross. Just under 1 1/2” height. Professionally refurbished with the pure silver overlay restored, on a modern Sterling silver neck chain and gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
