GOOD LARGE BYZANTINE PILGRIM'S RING
7th-10th century AD. Size 9 1/4. Tapered band flared to diamond shapes below the bezel. Circular bezel with cross shaped flower motif with lineal leaf infill. Well preserved with good patina. While Pilgrims were readily identifiable, they were increasingly less welcome after the introduction of Islam in the 7th century which ultimately contributed to the Crusades. The motif on this ring is likely a dedication to the cross and the sacrifice it represented, clear to the wearer but obscured to non-Christians.
