ITALIAN GIRL'S RING 12th-15th CENTURY
Gilt bronze, size 6 3/4 with plain band slightly flared to the bezel cut with a saltire flanked by bands. A charmingly simple ring for a family of modest means. The use of the saltire was a declaration of Christianity, important for travel on the Mediterranean and coastal Italy where raiding Moors and marauders took hostages. Being identified as Christian might assure being ransomed rather than sold into slavery. Professionally refurbished with the gold overlay restored.
