The emergence from the Dark Ages is embodied in the rise to power of the Frankish King, Charlemagne in 768 (founder of the Holy Roman Empire after 800) followed by conquering southern Europe from France to Italy and much of Northern Europe. The condition for peace was an acceptance of Christianity, under the penalty of death. Conversion was effective and Northern Europeans, primarily Saxons, wore small crosses to affirm their Christianity. This is an original Northern European "profession of faith" cross 1000 years old, about 8/10” (0.80") height, with expanded beam terminals which also Represent "crutches". That form is known as the Crusader's cross, having been an element in the arms of Godfrey Bouillon which he wore during the First Crusade. For that reason, it is also known as the Jerusalem Cross. The beam junction with diamond enclosing a cross. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored on a modern gilt neck chain. See the reference image which shows the process. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
