RARE VARIATION ANCIENT VIKING HEART PENDANT NECKLACE, 10th-11th CENTURY
Gilt bronze. slightly under 1” width. Broad borders with incised hound’s stippled field. Pierced with three segments, the lower a heart. A heart within a heart! Together with the flanking piercings, a trefoil is formed. Foliate designs were favored by Vikings and incorporated into about half of the heart pendants. The heart symbol embodied the very Viking spirit. Pierced heart pendants are rare and this is the only example encountered with triple piercing. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored, on a gilt Sterling silver neck chain for modern wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
