RARE VATIATION VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH, C.870-1066 AD
Cambridgeshire, England. Circular over 7/8” diameter. Made of white metal, tin/zinc alloy, finely modeled with crenulated perimeter and narrow rope(?) inner edge. Excellent preservation with fine glossy patina. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Suspended on a Sterling silver neck chain. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
