Gilt bronze. As expert navigators, the constellations signified mystery and power to Vikings. Lunar pendants were worn as pectorals as well as suspended from belts, other clothing, and horse harnesses. This example is about 3/4" high elegantly formed as the crescent moon with the tips touching. Variations on this theme include ball tips representing Sol the sun and Mani the moon, and the junction embracing a cross. They are very complex representation of an astrological event which had supernatural significance to Vikings, now lost. This example is simplified with the sun (Sol) at the center and the moon (Mani) in six positions around the sun expressing an astronomical phenomenon, the significance of which is now unknown. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored and mounted on an 18” gilt Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
