11th century AD. Silvered bronze, 1 1/8” diameter, bin four segments separated by addorsed banding and the clasped hand (hand shake) symbol at the corresponding quarter points. That symbol was universal throughout Europe at the time and expressed peace as it does today. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, these small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. Professionally refurbished with the silver overlay restored, on a modern polished leather neck cord. Gift boxed with certification of authenticity. Rare form.
