ROMAN/BYZANTINE CHRISTENING/BAPTISM RING, C. 2ND-6TH C. AD, SZ 1/2
Gilt bronze, size about 1/2 which suggests a child of six months age or less. Slightly rounded face band, 2.0mm width flaring slightly to the shoulders. Circular bezel with a central cross of triple line beams, surmounted by a saltire. The custom of baptizing infants originated in the second century with the evolution of the concept of Original Sin. Rings for infants were surely a luxury reserved for the noble class. Professionally refurbished with 24karat gold surface restored. See the reference image which shows the process. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity. A wonderful gift for a modern Baptism!
