Prostitutes in the Roman Empire were young and often slaves. They wore these distinctive rings to be easily recognized in the streets. This one has a 3.3mm round band topped with garish banded pyramidal mount comically emulating the stone of the quality rings worn by cultured women. Some wear from extended use. Prostitution was practiced openly in ancient Rome and some of the best evidence is in the remains of Pompeii. Professionally refurbished with the pure silver surface restored.
