Gothic Period, C1200-1500. Gilt bronze, about 1 1/8” height plus the suspension loop. The crossbeam above center with trefoil terminals forming “crutches” as on the Jerusalem Cross and commemorating the five wounds of Christ the surface with a crucified figure, presumably St. Peter. The back plain. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored, on a modern gilt neck chain. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. At his crucifixion, Saint Peter asked to die on an inverted cross as he was not worthy to die in the same way as Christ. The inverted cross is a tribute to Saint Peter, later embraced by practitioners of Satanism.
