VIKING COIL RING 850-1100 AD
4 ½ circular section coils. Size 11 ¼. Ancient and Medieval bronze casting produced, on a volume basis, items which would challenge modern artists. Particularly notable are the casting of coils as in the springs of fibula, the turns of which abutted but were not connected. Vikings used the coil in rings, neck torques, hair ornaments and other applications. This example is textured from burial and professionally conserved with the gold overlay restored.
