VIKING GILT HEART AMULET
As with most cultures, the heart had special meaning for Vikings. It was a male symbol for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the warrior. Warriors wore hearts as brooches, pendants and pectorals often in significant multiples. It is said that Hrungnir, with whom Thor dueled (assisted by a sorceress), had a heart of stone. This example, 4/5” high depicts the heart with four nubs to the edge and large raised node in center of four lobed field. Excellent preservation, professionally refurbished with the gold restored.
