VIKING HEART PENDANT C.900-1050 AD
About 3/4" height plus the loop, flat with scrolls forming the sides and defining the cusp. Rectangular form central piercing. The foliate trefoil was a very popular motif for Viking hearts. The form of the heart is transitional combining natural as in the body and stylized with the top cusp. Both forms are used profusely in Nordic literature. The heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, and integrity, all attributes of the Viking warrior. It is abundantly referenced in Viking literature. Surface textured from burial.
