VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE, 10th-11th CENTURY AD
Gilt bronze, over 1/2” (0.58”) height. Circular, pierced with a cusped top heart, resulting in a heart superimposed on a crescent, both images with supernatural significance. The heart and crescent moon are the most popular motifs found in original Viking jewelry. For Vikings, the heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the warrior. It is said that Hrungnir, with whom Thor dueled (assisted by a sorceress), had a heart of stone. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored and mounted on a modern gilt neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
