VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE, 11th CENTURY AD
Silvered bronze, just over 7/8” height plus the suspension loop. The form combines the crescent moon with tips joined and forming a heart with a figure, probably representing the sun, within. These combined images evolved at the later part of the Viking era when Christianity was well established. The heart and crescent moon are the most popular motifs found in original Viking jewelry. For Vikings, the heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the warrior. It is said that Hrungnir, with whom Thor dueled (assisted by a sorceress), had a heart of stone. Professionally refurbished with the silver overlay restored and mounted on a modern Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
