VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH.
10th-11th century AD. About 1 1/8” diameter, Circular, flat face with transverse bars at the sixth points, the top one dimpled for the cross pin. The significance, probably spiritual, now lost. These small metal brooches provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor when worn in numbers. This example is professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored on a modern polished leather neck cord, gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
