VIKING SLAVE LOCK KEY
10th-11th century AD. Finely forged example, about 3 3/4" in length, the shank tapered through its length, with T form bit (tip). Opposite is forged as a curled end loop for suspension. Professionally conserved excavated condition. Vikings were very active slavers with the typical Viking household having a slave dwelling outbuilding. They raided coastal Mediterranean towns, often crossing to North Africa where the captives were sold into slavery. It is estimated that by 1100, ten percent of Europe's population was enslaved.
