Carolingian Period, C.780-900 AD, the period of Charlemagne and the imposition of Christianity on Europeans under penalty of death. 7/8” diameter, pewter or lead with glossy gray patina. Impressed in low relief with an expanded beam symmetrical cross one side. The other side flat. punched with two hanging holes. A peasant’s pendant made to comply with the declaration of Christianity requirement. The double holes possibly to assure against its loss which could have had catastrophic consequences.
