Gilt bronze, size 6 1/2. Flat faced band, 2.5mm width cut with X’s or saltires all around. Raised rectangular bezel cut with a saltire, superficially imitating a gemstone and perhaps indicating that this was the ring of a prostitute. Roman prostitutes were typically adolescents, largely slaves. Prostitution was practiced openly with brothels sometimes sharing doors with libraries. Surface textured from burial. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
