This is a superb quality example of a type of ring that was popular among Austro-Hungarian soldiers in the third quarter of the 19th century when, as part of the Triple Alliance, the Austro-Hungarian military occupied the northern Balkans against Russian invasion and control. In form, it matches the common examples with line bordered shield centered. Most soldiers had a date in the 1880’s engraved. This example is vacant. The shield is supported by two stippled buttresses on each side which continue to form the band which is 4.2mm at the bottom. Size 10 1/2. The ring is distinguished by its crisp deep relief sculpturing and minute detail. It likely belonged to a high-ranking officer. It is gilt bronze with the heavy gold surface restored and is gift-boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
