10th-11th century AD. Vikings were highly skilled metallurgists, and as a result, breaking metal had supernatural significance for them. Breaking ringjarn (iron rings) as shown on the Larbro Stone in Gotland Sweden, was thought to destroy the spirits of enemies. Similarly, Viking weapons and accouterments were broken for burial with their owners. This is the end of a fine heavy Viking warrior’s bronze bracelet, ritually broken. It is about 1 1/4” x 1 3/4” hand made by a Viking 1000 years ago, with thick transverse ridge and lineal medial. The weight and configuration suggest that it had a defensive purpose in addition to being decorative. That it has been ritually broken verifies its use by a warrior. It has been professionally refurbished with a pure silver overlay and a Sterling silver mount to a polished leather 18” neck cord for modern wear. It comes with a certification of authenticity and is jewelry gift boxed.
