Bronze, as found condition with rich uniform patina. size 4 ¾, approximate as it is oval. 2.3mm well rounded face band. Raised square bezel engraved with four radials suggesting a cross or saltires and outer diagonals. These combine two early Christian symbols, the cross and Star of Bethlehem in a way that is abstracted enough to obscure their true meaning to the wearer. Christianity was ignored or tolerated in ancient Rome, and eventually sanctioned. During 303 to 313, the Great Persecution took place and governors were directed by the emperors to destroy Christian churches and texts. Christians refusing to embrace traditional religion lost their rights. Rings such as this were statements of their faith without attracting attention. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
