Gilt or gold, unmarked, modeled as a cobra with head and tail overlapping and scaley details full length. A blue cabochon set in the back of the cobra’s hood. Made during the Egyptian Revival fever which spread after the widely publicized accounts of the discovery and opening of the tomb of King Tutankhamun by Howard Carter in 1922. Jewelry, clothing styles, furniture and even architecture was affected. From Fulbeck Hall, Lincolnshire, England, ancestral home of the Fane family since 1632. Ex Sotheby’s sale of the estate in October 2002. Excellent.
