The Wheel of Fortune (Rota Fortuna) is one of the most enduring of ancient philosophical or spiritual concepts. It was pivotal in Ancient Greek and Roman Paganism and smoothly transitioned into Christianity, aided by the Roman philosopher Boethius in his 523 treatises, The Consolation of Philosophy. Its popularity grew with Christianity’s spread, represented in art, including Chaucer and Shakespeare, for two. This amulet is slightly under 7/8” (0.84”) diameter, made by the lost wax technique, with high relief floral interpretation of a 16 spoke wheel with a high domed central hub with depressed field and raised foliate composition defining the spokes. Well detailed and preserved. It has been professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored. It is mounted on an 18” Sterling silver necklace for modern wear.
