The period of conversion to Christianity. Silvered bronze. Broad bordered well defined heart with beaded surround and nubbed quarter points. The heart center with a further device, perhaps armorial now obscured by age and burial degradation. By 1100, Vikings were largely converted to Christianity and fought in the first Crusade. Pagan belief were blended with the new faith, sometimes thinly disguised. This evidently is such a case of a pagan icon carried into the period of Christianity. The heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, all attributes of the Viking warrior. It is abundantly referenced in Viking literature. Professionally refurbished with the silver overlay restored on a Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
