ANCIENT VIKING LUNAR PENDANT NECKLACE, C.1000 AD
Slightly under 1" height plus the suspension loop. Bronze, cast, and chased as the crescent moon with baluster tips representing Sol the sun and Mani the moon the field with a raised medial. The upper edge raised as well. A conical dome above with a cross surmounted. Probably in recognition of Christianity, to which Vikings were converted in the 11th century. The transition involved considerable adaption of old pagan beliefs and symbols as seen here. Viking worship involved the heavenly bodies on which they relied for guidance when sailing. Fine quality. Excellent condition with the 24karat gold overlay restored and mounted on a modern gilt neck chain for contemporary wear. Gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity.
