The Wheel of Fortune (Rota Fortuna) is one of the most enduring of ancient philosophical or religious concepts. It was pivotal in Ancient Greek and Roman Paganism and smoothly transitioned into Christianity, aided by the Roman philosopher, Boethius in his 523 treatises, The Consolation of Philosophy. Its popularity grew with Christianity’s spread, represented in art, including Chaucer and Shakespeare, two. Its popularity among the common folk who were most likely to be affected by misfortune resulted in widespread reliance on amulets representing the Wheel of Fortune as seen on cathedral windows and in literature. This amulet is slightly over 7/8” (0.88”) height. It is made by the lost wax technique, in the form of a partial wheel with a central hub and five intricate spokes supporting the rim. The hub is set with a green “stone”. These partial wheels are well represented and may be regional or simply concessions to fashion at the time. The surface is lightly textured from burial. It has been professionally refurbished with 24karat gold and the “stone” restored. It is mounted on an 18” gilt Sterling silver neck chain for modern wear.
